New hospital facilities

Construction and refurbishment of Tauranga Hospital began in 2005 and is now 75 per cent complete. It has cost around $139 million. The last phase – the new east wing – started in November 2009 and will take around 18 months.

The north wing tower is now complete. It features:

  • new operating theatre suite for acute, elective and day stay surgery
  • new outpatients department, relocated and expanded Assessment Treatment and Rehabilitation Unit and Allied Health Unit
  • relocation and consolidation of maternity, antenatal and the special care baby unit into the main hospital building
  • expanded emergency department, with increased treatment places
  • new Admission Planning Unit
  • expanded imaging department
  • refurbished west ward
  • central and theatre sterile supplies unit consolidated into a single facility co-located with the theatre suite

What’s happening now?

BOPDHB Chair Mary Hackett (left) is delighted to welcome Tauranga MP Simon Bridges (centre) and Minister of Health, Mr Tony Ryall (right) to the Tauranga Hospital site on 22 January 2010. My Ryall announces funding approval for the building of the new East Wing (Building 50).

Work on the new five-storey east wing block is underway and expected to be completed by mid 2011. It will cost approximately $25 million.
A number of enabling works will be happening over the next few months to prepare for this.

A number of smaller refurbishment and renovation projects are currently in progress. We expect to complete these with a minimum of disruption or inconvenience to patients and visitors.
